Show Notes

THIS WEEK:

Dill, Anna, and Ted are in-studio

We catch up with Joel Natalie, the host of Talk Erie!

Joel gives us his bio and a quick CV: he’s been on the air for most of the last 40 years, starting at Gannon’s WERG before he even started his freshman year at Gannon in 1980. He’s spent some time in television production as well. He tells us how he returned to Erie and what led to the creation of Talk Erie, and how he thought FM talk radio could work. He further talks about how he wanted to integrate that into modern media telling us how he’s moved to Instagram and Facebook, but things like TikTok and Snapchat are reaching folks that are outside his core demographic. Somehow his audience is largest with 30–65-year-olds, plus a he’s got a lot of downloads from a younger demo from Spotify!

Also:

  • We talk changes in news director at WJET - Lou Baxter has stepped down and Sean Lafferty is filling his considerable shoes.
  • Joel busts out a Trans-Atlantic accent that puts anything we’ve ever done to shame.
  • Joel gets the big interviews: he broke the story locally about the expanding number of covid locally thanks to wastewater testing! Do we need to see the b-roll of sewage on a loop?
  • How did the pandemic affect his show?

The Ember+Forge Beer Segment!

Be sure to catch this segment LIVE every Wednesday on Facebook! This week, Anna, Dill, Ted, and Joel sample “Mutant Temple” an IPA from Strange Roots Experimental Brewing in Gibsonia, PA!

AFTER THE BREAK:

Ryan Louis joins us for the rest of the show!

Ted’s grandma gave us some cookies and Dill laments eating Nutella over the sink.

We have a great talk about wages - Joel gives us a different perspective from our normal one on how the lack people willing to work has affected the economy! Is there a difference between a big box retailer paying people a $15 minimum wage and the smaller businesses who are working with small workforces - what can bring people back to work?

Who was Joel’s favorite local politician to interview? He name-drops a few folks that he loves talking to.

Where can you find Talk Erie? They’re on the radio at 105.9 FM, social media, and wherever you can find your favorite podcasts!
